Smart Reader uses your phone's camera to recognize license plates from active AMBER and Silver alerts — entirely on-device. Plates are matched locally; nothing leaves your phone unless you confirm a sighting. Held back to 'Coming Soon' for v1.0 App Store launch; we're funding the on-device CV model, the audit-log infrastructure, and the active-plates priming pipeline.
The challenge
Privacy-preserving plate recognition is novel. We need on-device ML throughput that doesn't drain battery, a tight false-positive ceiling, and an audit trail that holds up to investigative scrutiny.

Community-funded. No commercial partners — the privacy posture would slip.

Version 0.1 — Proof of plate extraction
Oct 2021
External SaaS-based plate extraction validated the core idea. Replaced in v1.0 by on-device Vision/CoreML.
Version 0.5 — Object detection
Jul 2022
Native vehicle detection added so the plate ROI is right before OCR fires.

Q2 2026
Gated to 'Coming Soon' for the App Store launch. The full implementation (CameraSession, PlateRecognizer, ROI overlay, status bar, audit log, consent gate, settings) ships in the binary; we unlock it in a follow-up release once the false-positive ceiling is independently audited.
